Turkey’s Winter Destinations

When the weather cools down it is easy to stay hunkered down at home. However, with so many excellent options for fun city breaks and gorgeous natural areas to visit during the cold winter months, it is hard to stay at home in Turkey.

Eskisehir:

Between Ankara and Istanbul, Eskisehir is a lively university town. The Odunpazari quarter is home to one of Turkey’s newest and most important modern art museums. Located in a striking building, the Odunpazari Modern Museum is a must-visit for art lovers. When you are done, you can visit the historical quarter full of old wooden houses and stop at Karakedi Bozacisi for a glass of boza, a popular winter drink made from fermented grains and garnished with dried chickpeas and cinnamon. Take a walk in one of the many parks then catch the fast train back to the city.

Bolu:

A small town surrounded by national parks and close to Katalkaya Ski Mountain Bolu is the spot to enjoy winter activities. Popular for weekend trips, visitors pass their time snowmobiling, driving ATVs off-trail, and enjoying bonfires. Cozy up around a fire with a hot toddy and enjoy the crisp winter air.

Safranbolu:

Well-known locally but not often frequented by foreign tourists, this UNESCO World Heritage should be on everyone’s list for a visit. Full of near perfectly preserved wooden Ottoman homes and cobbled stoned streets enjoy visiting the old hands and trying saffron Turkish Delights. Beautiful boutique hotels and bed and breakfasts are available, the only problem is choosing which one to stay in!

Eastern Black Sea:

Fly into Trabzon and drive up to the Kackar mountains to spend a weekend in a log cabin. Alpine plateaus, pristine rivers, and fresh mountain air will make it a weekend to remember. Make sure to try Mihlama, cornmeal, and melted cheese dish, similar to fondue, that’s perfect for the winter.
